DOS Further Expands Social Media Vetting for Visa Applicants

Introduction

Effective March 30, 2026, the U.S. Department of State expanded its online presence review to include additional nonimmigrant visa classifications. The Department’s stated goal of this change is to enhance national security vetting across a broader range of visa applicants. The practical effects will include increased delays and intrusion into applicant personal information.

New Visa Classifications for Online Presence Review

The following nonimmigrant visa categories are now subject to social media vetting:

  • Newly Added Classifications

  • A-3, C-3 (domestic workers), G-5, H-3, H-4 dependents of H-3, K-1, K-2, K-3, Q, R-1, R-2, S, T, and U.
  • Previously Included Classifications

  • H-1B applicants and dependents.
  • F, M, and J student and exchange visitor visa applicants.

Impact on Visa Applicants

The expanded vetting process will have several implications:

  • Longer Wait Times: The thorough vetting will inevitably result in extended delays for all visa applicants, which will affect time-sensitive travel or employment needs.
  • Increased Scrutiny: Applicants will undergo a more rigorous examination of their online presence, potentially leading to concerns over the factors used by DOS to interpret social media activities, how data is used and how it is retained.
  • Privacy Concerns: The requirement to set profiles to public raises significant privacy issues, as some applicants may be uncomfortable sharing personal information with DOS as well as the general public.

Conclusion

While the expansion of social media vetting introduces new challenges for visa applicants in the categories listed above, the additional scrutiny will inevitably affect visa processing times more generally. In addition, as social media screening becomes increasingly integrated into DOS consular procedures, the expanded vetting clearly signals that all applicants for U.S. visas should proactively review  online activities prior to seeking a visa for entry into the United States.
